Check earlier forum postings for rattling noises. I had a similar one that I could swear was coming from the engine but it turned out to be a loose side cover. Scroll down in the forum and you can read the thread. Not saying that's your problem, but don't assume the worse.
As for oil volume, there is no exact volume in my experience. Mine takes around 2.5 quarts, but I recently overfilled and had to drain off some of the new oil. From now on, I'm going to put my bike on my lift and slowly fill until I reach the max level on the glass window. No more guessing with the bike on its sidestand.
